Cool, sunny morning for fishing at Prairie Queen. Fished with ultralights and light 4# line, leeches, Euro and Canadian crawlers and fished in the trees and drop offs. Caught LMB, Crappie, Redear sunfish and Bluegill. Run of the mill sizes but a good bite and fun to fish at Prairie Queen.
Cool, sunny morning for fishing frogs. Lizard hooked with 11 and kept a limit! Hunted doves at a new pasture and draw, did not see that many birds but got 2 passing by! Picked a handful of puffball mushrooms with plans to eat on top of some ribeye - Yum!
Slow fishing morning amongst the California smoke. Hit the shoals hard with a bonus 22” wally caught off a breakwater tip on jig and leech. Shoals produced a mere 3 largemouth, 2 crappie and 2 white bass. Yep white bass in Yankee, mostly small but they are growing! Water on the surface was like green paint, not pretty! Hope the wind blows or this lake is setup for a ugly fish kill!
The purpose for going to Branched Oak was to look for shad and active crappie beneath. I found both but no action on live minnows and jig raps! Good news the boat still runs good at trolling speeds! Three and a half hours of slow fishing here was enough for me and the crazy’s with the noisy power boats and jet ski’s nuts are starting to overload the boat ramp, time to take my punches and go home! Checked for fall mushrooms on my way home at one spot - none yet!
This morning's frogging trip was a test against the wind. It took me longer to catch 13+ smaller and legal frogs because of the windy conditions, but I prevailed to hook a limit (8 bullfrogs 4.5" or bigger). I love this time of year as I can do some frogging and scout for doves while in the area at the same time. Hopefully some rain will bring out the fall mushrooms soon. Doves-frogs-mushrooms and picking some ripe red apples makes for a fun trip out!
Super morning to go Froggin, no wind, frogs not at all spooky and easier to land the cast lizard on target! Sunny, warm and humid as the hoppers were aggressive so it didn’t take long to catch 17+ small and legal frogs and keep a limit for a delicacy meal of legs, HyVee asparagus and cold watermelon-hmmm.

Long time friend was in Lincoln for the weekend seeing family so we met up with the boat in tow and headed to Wildwood for a few hours of fishing. My friend had not frogged but wanted to try it and learn the tricks to the trade. We put 10 nice hoppers in the bucket in a short time with the light winds and the aggressive bite. The opposite was the fish bite, slow with only a few Bluegill caught, one nice Bass and Yellow Perch. We cut the trip short so Tim could get on the long road back home. Frogging good, catching fish bad!
Warm morning for fishing at Wildwood. Winds were light from the southwest - I like some chop on the water. Picked up a handful of Bluegill and a fair Crappie on 1/16 oz. jigs and leeches and Canadian night crawlers. Highlight was 2 big C. Catfish (10-12# range) on the light line and ultralight rods, fun to catch! REGULATION: Total catch and release on the catfish at Wildwood. Saying this to those that don’t read the signs or look at the fishing regulations and are keeping them. The reason they get that big in Wildwood is because of the good folks that abide by the regulation - enough said!
A little late getting out this morning, the sun was getting higher and the hoppers were moving into cover and shade! First pond I visited was disappointing, the pond was drying up and I think the frogs migrated to the creek. Tall terrestrial vegetation covered the entire area around the pond and I found only a few keeper size frogs. Worked hard but I landed 4 of various sizes as they were aggressive, I kept 2 and loaded up and moved to the next pond. Better luck here with better choices and bigger sizes! Finished out with a nice limit (8 bullfrogs) of 4.5”-5”+ for a delicacy meal tonight, deep fat fried frog legs-”hmmm good” as they say!
The frogs stuck out like a sore thumb, easy-peasy as they sat along the edge of the lake. Aggressive to the hook and almost addictive this frogging. Wetook turns fishing them but in a short time we had 15-16 “hoppers” caught and a limit (8) in the ice down bucket of the nice 5-6” croakers. Then it was time to fish for Bass, Bluegill and Green Sunfish. We both rigged up a rod with a Satra Special rig on the line with a medium leech. We tossed into 2- 3’ of water near a known drop off dropping to depths of 12’. Instantly, we were catching fish on the ultralights. A dozen 10-14” bass, small Bluegill and Green Sunfish were caught, and lots of fun was had. A good morning for birding, bird photography, catching bullfrogs and fish from the boat!
Started out early AM catching Bullfrogs at my traditional frogging ponds. Didn’t see as many frogs as I had hoped for but what I did see were very aggressive to bite. Caught 14 frogs while II kept a Limit (8 Bullfrogs) of nice 5”+ hoppers. Tall grass and lake edge vegetation so a lot of “blind” catches are always fun, frogging is a great way to get outdoors during this Covid-19 Pandemic!
Great morning hook up the boat and go fishing for frogs and fish. Started out early AM catching my limit of bullfrogs at this public lake (exact location will remain a secret until you join me on a trip). I didn’t see as many frogs as I had hoped for but what I did see were very aggressive to bite. I kept a limit (8 bullfrogs) of nice 5”+. Winds were light from the north so I hit a couple past fishing hot spots. Ended up camping on one spot and caught 43+ small bass in the 10-14” size on jigs and leeches, ultralight rods and reels/light line. Good bite on the gentle 4-11” drop-off. Picked up a handful of small Bluegill, a Green Sunfish, a Crappie and 3 Channel Catfish fiddlers. It was a fun morning catching frogs and Bass from the boat. I love retirement and getting outdoors during this pandemic!
Super morning to go Froggin, no wind, frogs not as spooky and easier to land the cast on target! Cloudy and cool, the hoppers were aggressive so it didn’t take long to catch 20+ frogs and keep a limit of nice frogs for a delicacy meal of legs, fresh sweet corn and cold watermelon! Nice Friday morning trip to Flanagan with a nice guy from Lincoln - we fished from the boat! Light south winds. We fished small jigs and the Satra special rigs tipped with medium-large size leeches and crawlers. He jigged amongst the trees. We also placed a slip bobber on the edges of the inundated trees fishing 6’ depths. The Bluegill bite was great with fish up to 8.5”. Landed one medium sized crappie about 8”. Highlight of the morning was landing a pig, 20 inch plus Channel Catfish from within the dense tree vertical habitat.
Early morning trip to Wanahoo with a friend and his dog in the boat! Light winds and sun was low so we put the trolling rods out, we snapped on a couple crankbaits, a # 7 Flicker shad and a #9 Flicker minnow. Spooled out 100’’ of line on the line counter reels and pulled them at 2.5- 2.7 mph range over open waters. Bumped the bottom on the edge of the lakes drop offs and points and hooked up with one, nice 16” (about 3 lbs) Bucketmouth Bass. We changed tactics with the light north wind, we anchored up tying off to trees and finesse fished with the Satra special rigs tipped with Can. NC’s and also we used small jigs tipped with medium-large size leeches. Best results jigging among the trees and casting the 1/32 oz. jigs off these points near deep water drop offs into 22’ depths, fish were hanging out in 8-12’.
The weather changed; first came the rains, then the winds. We took refuge and a short in the truck in the parking lot. The rains stopped so we boarded the boat and toughed out the strong north 30-35 mph winds. The bite was good for smaller Crappies and we caught Bluegill up to 9”. We stay with the plan to “target” the big Bass catching a few more while finishing out the trip with blue skies. Strange weather morning for fishing at Lake Wanahoo.
A good Bluegill bite as a mother and teenage son joined me for fishing at Flanagan Lake. They jigged among the trees and cast/finesse fished with small 1/32 oz. jigs with bling tipped with medium sized leeches and crawlers. No disappointment in the quality of fish caught and the bite today at this new lake in northwest Omaha. A number of fair sized Crappie up to 9” with jigs tipped with plastic bodies. Trip was a short one but a few small Bass were hooked in the same depths as the Bluegill. A fun morning fishing at this catch and release fishing lake for these two anglers.
Rain, rain go away! I’m trying to catch fish here! Recent trip over to Flanagan Lake with the boat, the rains cut into my fishing time but didn’t deter the fish from biting. Jigged among the trees and cast/finesse fished small 1/32 oz. jigs with bling tipped and medium sized leeches & crawlers. No disappointment in the quality of fish and the bite today at this new lake. The Bluegill bite was really hot! Caught 50+ fair size Bluegill, fun using the ultralights and light line. Picked up a number of fair Crappie to 9”, a dozen Largemouth Bass at 9-16” and a dreaded 12” Bullhead - Not to insult you bass fisherman but I thought I had a good bass hooked up!
Overall very good fishing between the rain storms and the wind gusts at this “Catch and Release Only” fishing lake in northwest Omaha. Yes, I got wet! Not fun but hey an adventure! Oh, I kinda felt like a “bridge troll” finding refuge out of the rains as I fished under the Ida Street bridge.
Again on this day I went fishing at Merritt with friends both in the morning and evening! We started by anchoring up in 5ft of water and cast 1/32 oz. jigs with ½ crawlers and leeches. Both morning and evening fishing worked well catching numerous small Walleye, Smallmouth Bass, Bluegill and Yellow Perch. Rigged up a dead rod/dead stick to dangle live bait just off the bottom. We caught some nice and some smaller Smallmouth and a nice mess of Bluegill using this technique, no keeper Walleye but we had fun. Never got the Walleye chop winds but a nice morning of fishing. Evening trip was cut short by rains and lots of lightning and of course, a good Walleye chop during the storm!
